Vim High Risk RCE Hole CVE-2026-34714: AI Dig-in, zero-interactive, enforce any code
In April 2026, the Vim editor exposed a high-risk remote code implementation gap (CVE-2026-34714, CVSS 9.2). This loophole was found by researchers using AI support audits to achieve zero interactive attacks by embedding malicious tabpanel configurations in Modrine: Users can automatically trigger and execute any system command in the backstage without any additional operation, using Vim. Currently POC is open, wide-ranging, please upgrade all Vim users immediately!

Hole theory
Method of attack: Modeline + Tabpanel
This loophole exists in Vim's Tabpanel function, where the assailant uses the %{expr} expression to inject a loophole and achieve code execution by embedding a malicious configuration in Modeline (Model Line) in the head of the document.
Attack sequence:
- The assailant created a special file containing malicious Moderine
- Open file with user using Vim
- Vim triggers a loophole while parsing Modeline
- Malicious expression automatically executed backstage
- The attackers have access to the system.
Zero interactive attack.
Most dangerously, this is a zero-interactive attack:
- User does not need to execute any command
- Just open the file to trigger.
- The attack is self-executed backstage.
- User Not Perception
Scope of impact
This loophole affects all pre-Vim 9.2.0272 versions, including:
- Vim installed by default of Linux system
- MacOS' own Vim
- Windows Vim
- Neovim (partial version)
- IDE-integrated Vim mode
AI, dig a hole.
This loophole was discovered by researchers using AI Auxiliary Audit, marking a major breakthrough in the area of loopholes:
- Automation code audit: AI analyzes the Vim source code and identifies security deficiencies in the Tabpanel function
- Hole mode recognition: AI identifies potential risk of %{expr} expression injection
- POC Auto Generate: AI Auxiliary Generating Gap Utilization Code
Rehabilitation programme
Option 1: Immediate upgrade, Vim
# Ubuntu/Debian
sudo apt update
sudo apt install vim
# CentOS/RHEL
sudo yum update vim
# macOS
brew update
brew upgrade vim
# 验证版本
vim --version
Ensure that version is greater than or equal to 9.2.0272
Option 2: Temporary mitigation
# 在 ~/.vimrc 中添加
set nomodeline
set modelines=0
Summary
Vim CVE-2026-34714 is a high-risk zero-interactive RCE loophole, CBSS score 9.2, with wide-ranging impact. This loophole was discovered by AI-assisted audits, marking a major breakthrough in the area of security research.
For all Vim users, it is safe to immediately upgrade to 9.2.0272 or more.
Vim Users Note: Upgrade immediately against the zero-interactive RCE attack!
